What a pity that a vet should make such comments about greyhounds (probably lost a few bob on them in the past).
After the fraternity have finished racing them, those that are not wanted anymore are discarded, usually by death, some are rescued by people who have great sympathy for them (like the owner of this webpage) who try and find them good homes.
From experience, I know that they make excellent pets, very docile, friendly, loyal and loving animals.
Please come along to this sanctuary and see for yourselves if you would be willing to give one a good home
I can only re-iterate the excellent points which have already been raised. Milne has allowed one incident to cloud her professionalism, and reasoning. Clearly, one incident is not enough to present as fact the notion that greyhounds, as a breed, should be destroyed. Who has not heard of similar incidents occurring with other breeds? I unfortunately witnessed the effects of a savage attack on my own greyhound at the hands of a supposedly "docile" breed, and yet realised that the real finger of responsibility should be aimed at the owner who did not leash an unpredictable dog. Therefore it is inexcusable that Milne sees fit to publicly condemn a breed that should actually be far more notorious for the fact that they are continually subject, in the racing world, to abuse, cruelty, and ultimately neglect, or far worse.
Greyhounds are sweet natured, loving, and actually with the right training exceptionally obedient. Milne wasted her time with an empty apology; instead she should present the public with some of the real facts about greyhounds, and the vicious, and I feel ignored side of greyhound racing. It would be far more valuable to educate people about this, and the organisations there to help (such as The Greyhound Sanctuary), than to use her column as a platform to present her personal feelings, or agenda.
